The San Francisco Standard is hiring an experienced Senior Producer and Story Editor for our flagship weekly news podcast—a high-impact, conversation-driven show that explores the most important stories shaping San Francisco. We’re looking for someone who thrives in fast-paced editorial environments, has a sharp ear for audio, and brings deep experience guiding story development from pitch to publish across both audio and video formats.
You’ll partner with the host, executive producer, and producers to shape each episode’s editorial arc, structure, and tone—ensuring every show is compelling, rigorous, and resonant. You’ll also help manage editorial calendars, oversee scheduling and production workflows, and direct episodes in both studio and field settings. This role is ideal for a creative and highly organized editor with a love of San Francisco, a collaborative spirit, and strong news instincts.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead editorial direction for the show, in collaboration with the hosts and executive producer
- Run pitch meetings and shape weekly coverage based on current events
- Guide episode development, from pre-interviews and scripting to structure and framing
- Provide detailed feedback on scripts and edits; help refine pacing, clarity, and tone
- Oversee final edits of episodes for editorial excellence and audio polish
- Manage production timelines and editorial calendars to meet deadlines and optimize workflow
- Direct hosts and guests during tapings (studio and remote)
- Work with newsroom reporters to adapt written stories into audio or video formats
- Review audio and video edits before publish to ensure consistent voice and high production quality
- Mentor producers, helping them grow their skills and deliver at a high level
- Uphold journalistic standards and create an inclusive, supportive editorial culture
Qualifications
- 7–10+ years of experience in audio production, with significant time as a lead editor or senior producer
- Proven track record shaping both conversational and narrative audio formats
- Experience managing teams and production workflows across editorial and technical teams
- Strong news judgment, especially in business, political, or local news contexts
- Familiarity with San Francisco’s political and cultural landscape is strongly preferred
- Excellent scripting, editing, and story-structuring skills
- Proficiency in Pro Tools, Descript, or Premiere (or similar editing software)
- Ability to manage and adjust production schedules, both short- and long-term
- Comfortable working on both audio and video projects, including studio and field recording
- Bonus: Experience with YouTube podcast packaging or repurposing audio for visual platforms
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $110,000–$170,000 annually, depending on experience
